"YouTubers should have to pay out a huge portion of their revenue to the developers from which they steal all their content" - Phil Fish
Not only is this a ludicrous statement, but a statement that wont make you any friends. You may have a lot of attention for this Phil, but that doesn't make it good attention. Phil later compared video game lets plays to streaming an entire movie for free on the internet, which is stupid because games can't really be compared to any other medium since its exclusively interactive; everyone in video games will come out with a different personalized experience based on what they did, what they chose to do in the game, so its really content creation on both sides.
Its not a matter of who owes who; its a matter of mutual benefit for the YouTuber and the developer, because the dev gets more traffic on their game from the YouTuber's audience and an excuse to not have to make a trailer for the game, whereas the YouTuber gets some traffic from the game's audience as well as something to make a video about. In all reality developers should be thankful for a lets play! Its free promotion, and not only is it that but its also free feedback; its the conversation between dev and player, because we do watch the videos and love them even if they are cursing at our game, they took the time to play our game and we probably learned how to make it better. Lets plays make my day, they really do. Heck even if we were to go about the whole piracy thing... If someone was that desperate to go about in illegal methods of getting my game for free and playing it, then they really must love it to put that effort in which makes me happy; if someone cared enough about my game that they'd want to steal it I would feel accomplished, smile, then have them test my next game. Too bad my games are all free on the internet publicly on many different platforms. Ha!
I don't think Phil is a an asshole or an attention hog, I just think he needs to think about what he says before he says it. He has become in a sense, a major face in our sub-culture of indie games which gives him an expectation of responsibility that he isn't fulfilling in the best of ways. Maybe be more polite to the army of assholes of the internet, because a nice response defeats an angry attack, i.e., the angry internet troll will feel bad about the rash comment of his/hers when they realize your only human too. Someone says something mean about my games I counteract it with something nice or logical, where Phil just tells them to choke on his dick: if you don't have something nice to say, simply don't say it. Try to be the better person, don't stoop to their troll level.
I think Phil has been in the limelight a little too much and needs to realize the effects of fame on how big his ego is, and learn some common manners. I don't really care what you believe in, or what side your are on, because I'm going to guarantee you that pretty much all indie developers will disagree with him and another (not as dramatic, more facial hair, nicer) Phil type of character will replace him later.
